Help Us Celebrate:
November is Native American Heritage Month

These events are meant to encourage dialogue and discussion about issues of Native American and Indigenous peoples on our campus. Our hope is that events such as these will unite us in our community’s celebration of Native American heritage and will encourage discussion about issues here on campus, in our country and worldwide.

There has been a lot of press and activity around Chief Illiniwek recently.  What do you know about this issue on campus?  How does it serve the sense of belonging that you and others feel on campus?  Come to share your perspective and become more informed.

Do Racial Mascots Honor or Offend? The Legacies of Chief Illiniwek and the Pekin "Chinks"

This presentation featuring will examine the controversial racial mascots of Chief Illiniwek and the Pekin "Chinks" and how they affect Native American and Asian American communities. It will provide information about the history of the mascots, discuss pro- and anti-mascot positions, and raise issues of the mascots' continuing legacies, even after they are retired.
 
These events are promoted by the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations (OIIR).
