McKean Elected GLACUHO State Delegate

Jason McKean, area coordinator for University Housing, was recently elected as the Illinois state delegate to the GLACUHO (Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers). This is a great honor for both McKean and Housing.

University Housing Student Delegation Wins Bid to Host Conference

Last weekend a student delegation from University Housing attended the GLACURH (Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls) Conference and won the bid to host next year's GLACURH Conference on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Rene Monteagudo Elected to ACCTA Board

Dr. Rene Monteagudo has been elected to the Board of Directors for The Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA). ACCTA is dedicated to promoting excellence in pre-doctoral psychology internship training within university and college counseling centers and it is quite an honor to serve on the Board.

Student Affairs Receives Two NASPA IV-East Awards

NASPA, the national Student Affairs organization, has recognized Illinois' Student Affairs efforts in two areas: Adele Lozano, Director and Assistant Dean of Students for La Casa Cultural Latina, is being awarded the 2009 NASPA IV-East Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award for "demonstrated leadership" and for her contributions to the University of Illinois community.

EPICS, the Exploring Pathways in Career Success program at the Career Center, has received the 2009 NASPA IV-East Innovative Program award. EPICS is being awarded for its "impressive career and professional development" program content for the students at the University of Illinois.

These award will be presented at the NASPA IV-East Dinner and Awards Program on November 8, 2009 during the NASPA IV-East Regional Conference to be held in Lombard, IL.

Kirsten Ruby Receives Media Relations Award

Kirsten Ruby, Assistant Director - Marketing, University Housing, was awarded the Media Relations Award for demonstrating skill and poise in dealing with the media. Said Robin Kaler, Associate Chancellor for Public Affairs, "While many folks must dip their toes in the media relations water as part of their jobs, this year’s winner frequently and elegantly swims in the deep end of the pool. She understands clearly what is news, how media deadlines work, the importance of telling the truth – and offering context...Kirsten Ruby, Director of Marketing for Housing, demonstrated grace and class, and she always represented the university well."

University Housing Receives APEX Award

The APEX awards are given annually by Communications Concepts, a company that produces a newsletter on business communications called "Writing that Works."  University Housing's Marketing professionals received an award of excellence in the category called "Total Publications Programs" for their collection of Family & Graduate Housing pieces: the Graduate Student Housing Options viewbook, University Apartments viewbook, and the Ashton Woods brochure.

Nameka Bates Receives Award

Nameka Bates, director of the Bruce Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, is the recipient of the Lorraine "Cathy" Acevedo Award from the Division of Public Safety. This award was created to honor the outstanding contributions of a University of Illinois member who has made the greatest contributions to inclusiveness and public safety, strengthening the community in the spirit of diversity, student rights and police-student relationships.

Adele Lozano Published

"Difficult dialogues at the intersections of race, culture, and religion," an article that is coauthored by Adele Lozano and Dafina Lazarus Stewart appears in the journal New Directions for Student Services. An abstract and full text of the article are available here.

Gail Rooney Elected President of Midwest ACE

Director of the Career Center, Gail Rooney, is president-elect for the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers, formerly the Midwest College Placement Association. She will preside over the annual conference in August 2009 as her first official duty. Her term begins July 1, 2009 and will conintue through June 30, 2010.

Since 1949, the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers has been bringing together professionals in collegiate career services and recruitment/staffing to collaborate, communicate, and connect. Through their efforts, college-educated men and women achieve their career goals and employers add value to their workplace.

AACC Leadership Award Recipients Announced

Pat Morey and Ross Wantland, Women's Center, recieved the Asian American Community Builder Award this year. The annual Asian American Leadership Awards recognize those who exemplify dedication to developing and implementing activities, programs and services that promote unity among Asian Americans and awareness of Asian American issues. Student Employee of the Year

Campus Recreation employee Sarah Blatti was selected as the University of Illinois Student Employee of the Year by the Office of Financial Aid. She was also selected as the Student Employee of the Year for the state of Illinois, which is the first time a U. of I. student has been selected for that honor. She has been with Campus Rec for the past three years.

Ronnie Kann Wins CAP Election for District 7

Veronica "Ronnie" Kann, La Casa Cultural Latina, won the election for the Council of Academic Professionals (CAP) for District 7. Congratulations to Ronnie and the other district winners Their terms will officially begin when they take office at the CAP meeting June 4, 2009.

Ruth McCauley Receives Cape Award

Ruth McCauley, Associate Dean of Students, was one of six staff members to receive the Chancellor's CAPE Award for 2009. Ruth received the award on April 1 for her tireless dedication to the Dean of Students Office. Read more information.

Student Affairs Staff in "Postmarks" 2009 Spring Edition

The Counseling Center was highlighted in an article, "Solutions for stressed-out students" in the Spring edition of the "Postmarks" publication. Peer educators Elizabeth Bennit, Michael Walker, and Saroj Hardit were quoted in their work with workshops and training for student groups, along with Deidre Weathersby, outreach services coordinator and clinical counselor. The Oasis in the Union, McKinley Health Center (MHC), and the UI Wellness Center, located in the ARC, were also mentioned in the article with perspectives fom Jennifer Carson, wellness promotion specialist and stress management coordinator at MHC.

Robin Allen, dietician for University Housing was featured in the article, "UI dietitian helps students one plate at a time."

In an article, "Recession driving job prospects down..." Gail Rooney, Director of the Career Center was interviewed.

Associate Dean Rhonda Kirts was profiled in the administrative highlights.

Campus Rec Receives Awards

The Campus Rec marketing staff was recently recognized for their work through the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Creative Excellence Awards. The Creative Excellence Awards are designed to recognize the innovation and creativity of NIRSA members and acknowledge their outstanding accomplishments in marketing recreational sports, fitness, facilities, and programs. Campus Rec captured four awards in three categories, including one first place and two awards in the Facility Publication category.

Career Center Receives Federal Grant

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been selected as a 2009-2010 Call to Serve grant university with an award of $3,000 for the first year and the option to renew in the second academic year for $2,000.  Greg Hatch and Imants Jaunarajs, from The Career Center, wrote the grant application which was awarded for their proposal to promote federal service at Illinois.  The Partnership will host a kickoff meeting in Washington, D.C. on February 9-10, 2009 to celebrate the award and kick-off the campaign.

In Memory of Jean F. Hill

Jean F. Hill passed away at the age of 84 on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. Formerly from Streator, IL, Jean came to the campus in 1957 as the resident director of the newly opened Allen Hall. She went on to become the assistant director of women in 1961. Jean piloted a program of support services for minority students from 1966-68, and served as associate director for Project 500 from 1968-1974. She served as university ombudsman from 1975-76, and then took the position of associate dean of students until her retirement in 1986. Created as her legacy, the Jean F. Hill Awards recognize exceptional seniors from underrepresented populations who have demonstrated outstanding campus leadership and overcome significant personal obstacles to earn their degrees. Memorials may also be directed to Jean F. Hill Foundation award.

CAPE Award Nomination Deadline: Fri, Nov 7

Reminder: Nominations for the 2009 CAPE Award are due by 5pm Fri, November 7, 2008. Academic professionals, civil service staff, and faculty may submit nominations.

The Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award is designed to recognize the importance of contributions made by academic professionals. APs perform a wide range of critical functions for our campus community and beyond. They advise, counsel and assist our students, faculty, and staff; provide critical administrative support services; support our research laboratories and educational programs; and offer important outreach programs throughout the state. The award is intended to honor the special accomplishments of individuals in this employment category.

Six awards are given annually, and nominees are judged on three criteria including work, personal, and professional contributions. Each winner receives $2,000 in cash at the award presentation for personal use and a $1,000 permanent salary increase. In addition, $1,000 will be added on a one-time basis to each winner’s departmental budget the following fiscal year for materials or training that will benefit their workplace in future years.

Becoming Visible in the Workplace: Changing Times for Gays and Lesbians, guest speaker - Mark Brostoff, Associate Director, Undergraduate Career Services, Indiana University, Bloomington.
The presentation is scheduled to begin at.  Please invite staff or anyone from your department that might like to attend the presentation. Mark will also be doing a presentation for students that evening (October 29, 6pm) in 165 Noyes Lab, entitled Gay Lives, Straight Jobs: Sexual Orientation and Career Decision Making.
